Frequently Asked Questions

Preventive Care

From what age does fissure sealing make sense?
Fissure sealing makes the most sense right after the permanent molars erupt, usually at primary-school age. It protects the deep grooves of the chewing surfaces, which are often difficult to clean with a toothbrush.

Questions About Preventive Care

How often should you go for a professional teeth cleaning?
We usually recommend a professional teeth cleaning once or twice a year. How often it makes sense for you depends on your individual tendency towards tartar and staining.
Does health insurance cover the cost of preventive care treatment?
Cost coverage varies depending on the health insurance provider and the specific service. We are happy to inform you about the conditions that apply to you during the consultation.
Where does bad breath come from and what helps against it?
Bad breath often has causes within the mouth itself, such as bacterial plaque or gum problems, and less often other underlying conditions. Together with you, we look specifically for the cause and a suitable solution.
What is the benefit of a fluoride tray?
A fluoride tray specifically strengthens the tooth enamel and can therefore help prevent tooth decay. It is made individually and used regularly at home.

Questions About Tooth Preservation

What is caries infiltration and does it hurt?
With caries infiltration, early-stage tooth decay is treated with a special resin, without any drilling at all. The procedure is usually low in pain and is particularly suitable for small, early lesions.
Can gum inflammation disappear on its own?
Mild gum inflammation can improve with consistent oral hygiene, but advanced periodontitis usually does not heal on its own. That is why early check-ups and, if necessary, treatment are important.
How can you tell that a tooth has died?
A dead tooth can become noticeable through darker discolouration, sensitivity to pressure, or even without any pain at all. We make a reliable diagnosis with an examination and, if necessary, an X-ray.
What happens if a tooth can no longer be saved?
In this case, we inform you comprehensively about the options for tooth replacement, from a crown to a bridge to an implant. We discuss which solution suits you individually.

Questions About Digital Diagnostics

Is a digital dental impression more pleasant than a classic impression?
Yes, the intraoral scanner captures your teeth without contact and without the classic impression tray and impression material, which most patients find noticeably more pleasant.
How much radiation exposure is there with digital X-ray?
Digital X-ray noticeably reduces radiation exposure compared to conventional X-rays, while producing sharp images that are immediately available.
Why is precise diagnostics important before treatment?
Careful diagnosis and planning is the foundation for gentler and more precisely fitting treatment paths. Digital methods help us accurately assess your individual situation.

Questions About Dental Implants

Can you still get implants even with a completely toothless jaw?
Yes, even with complete tooth loss, several implants can support a fixed or securely anchored tooth replacement. How many implants make sense in your individual case is clarified beforehand with 3D diagnostics.
How do I know whether an implant system is safe?
We only use implant systems whose tolerability and reliability are proven by clinical studies. During the consultation, we are happy to explain which system is suitable for your situation.
What happens during 3D diagnostics before an implant?
Using digital volume tomography (CBCT), your jaw is displayed three-dimensionally so that the implant position can be planned as precisely as possible. This increases planning reliability before the actual procedure.
How many teeth can be replaced with implants at the same time?
From a single gap to a complete row of teeth, various implant-supported restorations are possible. Which solution suits your situation is something we discuss individually during the consultation.

Questions About Aesthetic Dentistry

Can you still wear discreet braces as an adult?
Yes, transparent aligners can discreetly correct tooth position at practically any age. Whether they are suitable for your misalignment is something we clarify in an individual consultation.
What is the difference between an inlay and a crown?
An inlay is a precisely fitted insert for a limited cavity and preserves more tooth structure, whereas a crown encloses the entire visible tooth. Which solution makes sense depends on the extent of the damage.
Why do some crowns have dark edges at the gumline?
Dark edges usually occur with metal-containing tooth replacement, which can become visible at the transition to the gum. This can be avoided with metal-free, tooth-coloured ceramic.
Do you also offer aesthetic treatments other than for the teeth?
Yes, in addition to dental aesthetics, we offer selected aesthetic treatments in the mouth and lip area for a harmonious overall look. We are happy to discuss the details in a personal consultation.

Questions About Paediatric Dentistry

Can I transmit tooth decay to my child as a parent?
Yes, caries-causing bacteria can be transmitted, for example, by sharing spoons. Simple hygiene measures can significantly reduce this risk; we are happy to advise you on this.
How do I recognise tooth decay in my child's baby teeth?
Early signs can be white or brownish spots on the teeth. At regular check-up appointments, we specifically examine the baby teeth for this, so that treatment can take place as early and gently as possible.
How do I deal with my child's fear of the dentist?
We take children's fears seriously and deliberately take time at every visit to explain everything in a child-friendly way. A calm, patient approach helps most children build trust in the practice.

Questions About Dental Health During Pregnancy

Why do gums bleed more often during pregnancy?
Hormonal changes often make the gums more sensitive and more prone to inflammation during pregnancy. Careful oral hygiene and professional teeth cleaning can help counteract this.
Is it safe to go for a professional teeth cleaning while pregnant?
Yes, a professional teeth cleaning is generally possible during pregnancy and is often especially advisable due to increased gum sensitivity. If you have any questions, simply talk to us.
Can gum inflammation affect pregnancy?
Bacterial infections in the mouth are associated with an increased risk of pregnancy complications. That is why careful oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are especially worthwhile during this time.

Talk openly about your fear; we will then deliberately take more time and explain every treatment step beforehand. On request, we also offer gentle sedation methods such as nitrous oxide to make the treatment more pleasant.
Can I take a break at the dentist if it becomes too much for me?
Yes, we adapt the pace of treatment to your needs and are happy to agree on a signal beforehand that you can use at any time to indicate you need a short break.
Is treatment with nitrous oxide suitable for anxious patients?
Yes, nitrous oxide sedation has a mildly calming effect and can noticeably reduce tension during treatment. You remain responsive throughout, and the effect wears off quickly after treatment.

Questions About Financing

Can I pay for an expensive dental treatment in instalments?
For more extensive treatments, we offer an individual instalment plan on request. Simply talk to us about it, and we will discuss a suitable solution together.
Do I need to clarify financing costs myself in advance, or does the practice do that?
We are happy to advise you on possible financing solutions for your treatment. We discuss the specific arrangements individually with you in a personal consultation.
For which treatments is an instalment plan worthwhile?
An instalment plan can be especially worthwhile for more extensive treatments such as tooth replacement or implants. Whether it is worthwhile in your case is something we clarify together once the treatment and cost plan has been drawn up.

Questions About Bone Augmentation

Can I still get an implant if my jawbone is too weak?
In most cases, yes: with bone augmentation procedures, the necessary bone volume can often be created, making an implant restoration possible. Whether this applies in your case is clarified beforehand with 3D diagnostics.
What is a sinus lift?
With a sinus lift, the jawbone is specifically built up in the back area of the upper jaw to create sufficient volume for an implant there. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic.
How long does it take for augmented jawbone to be able to bear load?
Depending on the extent of the augmentation and the material used, it usually takes several months for the bone to become sufficiently stable for an implant. We discuss the exact timeline with you individually.

Questions About Dental Fillings

Which filling material lasts the longest?
Ceramic fillings are considered particularly durable and dimensionally stable, while tooth-coloured composite is gentle on the tooth structure. Which material makes sense depends on the size and location of the affected area.
Is getting a dental filling painful?
The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and is generally painless. Afterwards, the tooth may be a little sensitive to cold or heat for a few days.
How often does a dental filling need to be renewed?
Depending on the material and strain it is under, a filling lasts several years to decades. At regular check-up appointments, we check whether a filling is still sealed properly or should be renewed.

Questions About Tooth Replacement

How long can I wait before having a gap between my teeth closed?
A gap between the teeth should be treated as promptly as possible, as otherwise neighbouring teeth can shift and the chewing function as well as the gums can suffer. How urgent this is in your case is something we discuss during the examination.
What is the difference between a denture and implant-supported tooth replacement?
A removable denture rests on the gums or is attached to remaining teeth, while implant-supported tooth replacement is firmly anchored in the jawbone and can therefore offer a more natural chewing sensation. Which option suits you depends on your individual situation.
Can you eat and speak normally with a full denture?
A well-fitted full denture usually allows for largely normal eating and speaking again, although a certain adjustment period is common. If pressure sores or problems occur, the denture should be readjusted promptly.

Questions About Crowns & Bridges

When does a tooth need a crown?
A crown usually becomes advisable when too much tooth structure is missing to restore the tooth stably with a filling. It encloses the entire visible tooth and thereby restores its function.
Do healthy neighbouring teeth need to be ground down for a dental bridge?
Yes, a classic bridge relies on the neighbouring teeth, which need to be ground down for this purpose. If you want to avoid this, implant-supported tooth replacement can be an alternative, which we will discuss with you.
Does a ceramic crown look like a real tooth?
Fully ceramic or ceramic-veneered crowns come very close to the natural tooth colour and structure and are usually barely distinguishable from your own tooth.

Questions About Low-Pain Treatment

Can I get a particularly low-pain anaesthetic at the dentist?
Yes, we use modern, gentle anaesthetic techniques that make the injection as low in pain as possible. If you are particularly sensitive, feel free to mention this to us beforehand.
How long does the numbing effect remain noticeable after treatment?
Depending on the anaesthetic used, the effect usually lasts one to several hours. During this time you should be careful when eating and drinking.
Is there a way to feel the injection less?
Before some treatments, a numbing gel can make the injection site less sensitive. We are happy to discuss with you beforehand whether this is an option for you.

Questions About Our Team

Will I always be treated by the same dentist?
We strive to provide continuous care with a fixed point of contact for you. Depending on the treatment focus, a specialist colleague from the team may be brought in.
Can I request a specific dentist?
You are welcome to express your preference when booking your appointment; we take this into account as best we can as part of our scheduling.
How is the practice team put together?
Besides our dentists, a well-coordinated team of specialists works with us and supports you throughout the entire treatment.

Questions About Current Practice Topics

Where can I find the latest news from the practice?
On this page, we regularly report on news from the practice, from new treatment approaches to practical tips for your dental health.
How often is the topic of the month updated?
As the name suggests, we usually update this topic monthly, so an occasional check-in is worthwhile.
Can I ask you about a topic directly at my appointment?
Yes, feel free to ask us directly about topics that interest you at your next appointment.

Questions About Gentle Treatment

How is dental treatment made as low in pain as possible?
We dose the local anaesthetic precisely and adjust it individually for each patient. Thanks to modern, minimally invasive techniques, treatment steps today are noticeably gentler than in the past.
Are modern diagnostic methods also gentler on the body?
Yes, new diagnostic methods increase safety while also enabling more tissue-sparing procedures.
Is attention also paid to gentle techniques when placing an implant?
Yes, whether it is a preliminary examination, treatment or placing an implant: we consistently focus on a gentle approach that is as low in pain as possible.

Questions About Digital Volume Tomography

Why is a 3D X-ray taken before implant treatment?
The three-dimensional images show, even before the procedure, whether and where an implant is suitable, and identify bone volume, quality and individual features in good time.
Does a CBCT scan involve less radiation than a classic CT scan?
Yes, compared to conventional computed tomography, digital volume tomography involves a noticeably lower radiation exposure.
Does a CBCT scan also help plan bone augmentation in advance?
Yes, thanks to the 3D images, any bone augmentation that may be needed can be precisely planned already before implant placement.

Questions About the Edentulous Jaw

Can you still get fixed teeth with a completely toothless jaw?
Yes, implants create a functional and visually convincing solution even with complete tooth loss, for example as a firmly screwed-in row of teeth or a removable, implant-supported denture.
Does an implant-supported denture cover the whole palate?
No, both common variants leave the palate free of denture material, so the usual sense of taste is preserved.
Does an implant-supported denture sit more securely than a classic full denture?
Implant-supported tooth replacement usually offers a noticeably firmer and more secure fit than a classic denture that rests on the gums alone.

Questions About Closing Gaps Between Teeth

Can you tell an implant in the front tooth area is not a real tooth?
Implant-supported crowns and bridges sit firmly, look like your own teeth and feel like them too. Once the restoration is complete, the implant, replacement tooth and gums usually blend into a harmonious overall picture.
How long does it take to close a gap with an implant?
From implant placement to the final crown, several weeks usually pass, since the jawbone first needs to heal.
Are there alternatives to an implant for closing a gap?
Yes, depending on the situation, a classic bridge on the neighbouring teeth may also be an option. We clarify which solution is better suited to you in the consultation.

Questions About Implant Healing Time

How long does the healing period of an implant take?
The individual healing period is usually six to twelve weeks, during which the bone fuses firmly with the implant.
Will I have a visible gap during the healing period?
As a rule, you receive a temporary tooth replacement during this phase, so no noticeable gap appears.
What happens after the implant's healing period?
Once healing is complete, the implant takes on the role of an artificial tooth root and securely supports crowns, bridges or dentures.

Questions About Implant Care

How do I properly care for my dental implant?
Careful oral hygiene at home with a toothbrush and interdental care is essential for your implant to stay healthy in the long term.
How often should I come in for a check-up with an implant?
Regular check-up appointments are important to check the condition of the implant and the surrounding gums. We discuss the right frequency with you individually.
What does an individual preventive care plan achieve for implants?
A preventive care plan tailored to you helps detect inflammation around the implant at an early stage and keep your implants healthy over the long term.

Questions About Root Canal Treatment

Is a root canal treatment painful?
The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and is generally low in pain. Pain that existed beforehand due to the inflammation usually noticeably subsides already during the treatment.
Does a tooth stay preserved permanently after a root canal treatment?
After a successful root canal treatment, the tooth and surrounding tissue are usually free of symptoms again and can be preserved for many more years.
What exactly happens during a root canal treatment?
Using modern endodontic techniques, the tooth nerve, damaged by decay, bacteria or inflammation, is treated in order to preserve the function of the tooth. In some cases, we use microscope-assisted technology for this.

Questions About Periodontology

How can you recognise early-stage periodontitis?
Typical signs are bleeding gums, red or swollen gums and sometimes unpleasant breath. We make a reliable diagnosis with a periodontal status measurement.
Can periodontitis lead to tooth loss?
If left untreated, advanced periodontitis can indeed lead to the loss of teeth, as it attacks the tooth-supporting structures. With timely treatment, this can often be prevented or slowed down.
Is periodontitis treatment painful?
Treatment is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and is generally well tolerated. Afterwards, the gums may be a little sensitive for a short time.

Questions About Caries Infiltration

What is caries infiltration and does it hurt?
With caries infiltration, an early, porous area of decay is sealed with a special resin, without any drilling at all. The procedure is usually low in pain.
What type of tooth decay is caries infiltration suitable for?
It is best suited to early stages, so-called initial caries, where the tooth surface is porous but not yet broken down. Whether it is an option in your case is checked during the examination.
Is healthy tooth structure sacrificed during caries infiltration?
No, unlike drilling, with caries infiltration a special resin penetrates the porous structure and seals it, without removing healthy tooth structure.

Questions About Digital Dental Impressions

Is a digital dental impression more pleasant than the classic impression tray?
Yes, the intraoral scanner spares you the discomfort of a conventional impression with impression material and is felt by most patients to be noticeably more comfortable.
How quickly are the results of a digital dental impression available?
Almost every situation in the mouth and jaw can be captured digitally and evaluated instantly with the help of a computer, with no waiting time at all.
What is a digital impression used for?
Digital impressions are used, among other things, for tooth replacement, splints and orthodontic treatments, increasing both comfort and precision.

Questions About Digital X-Rays

Is digital X-ray at the dentist more harmful than classic X-ray?
On the contrary: digital X-ray images require only a fraction of the radiation dose of classic images, while still providing detailed, reliable images.
How quickly is a digital X-ray image available?
Digital images are available immediately; there is no waiting time for film development and chemicals as with classic images.
Why are X-rays taken at the dentist at all?
X-ray images help to identify tooth decay between the teeth, inflammation or the condition of the jawbone, none of which would be visible with a purely visual examination.

Questions About Teeth Whitening

How long does professional teeth whitening last?
The result usually lasts several months to a few years, depending on your diet and smoking habits. Coffee, tea or red wine can cause the effect to fade more quickly.
Is professional whitening harmful to the teeth?
A professionally performed whitening treatment carried out correctly is considered gentle on tooth enamel. Improper use with unsuitable products, on the other hand, can lead to irritation.
Do crowns and fillings also become lighter during whitening?
No, whitening only works on natural tooth structure; crowns, fillings or veneers do not change colour as a result. We discuss this beforehand for a uniform result.

Questions About Inlays and Ceramic Restorations

What is the difference between an inlay and a normal filling?
An inlay is precisely made and then inserted, whereas a filling is shaped directly in the mouth. Inlays are considered particularly durable and dimensionally stable.
Can a ceramic inlay be completed in a single appointment?
Thanks to digital CAD/CAM technology, ceramic inlays are often made in our in-house laboratory directly during your practice visit, without you having to come again.
How long does a ceramic inlay last?
With good care and regular check-ups, ceramic inlays can last for many years, as the material is particularly stable in shape and colour.

Questions About Tooth Alignment Correction

Can you still have your tooth alignment corrected as an adult?
Yes, an orthodontic correction is usually possible without complications, whether in childhood or adulthood, since straight teeth know no minimum or maximum age.
Why are straight teeth about more than just appearance?
Besides appearance, the interplay of teeth, muscles and jaw joint matters for your well-being. A functionally well-balanced bite also lowers the risk of tooth decay and diseases of the tooth-supporting structures.
How noticeable is a tooth correction in adulthood?
There are discreet options such as transparent aligners, with which tooth alignment can be corrected inconspicuously. We discuss individually which method is suitable for you.

Questions About All-Ceramic Restorations

Why does full ceramic look more natural than tooth replacement with a metal framework?
Natural teeth also owe their appearance to translucency, meaning the way light passes through in layers. Full-ceramic materials can reproduce this effect, whereas metal-supported restorations can replicate the colour but not fully replicate the translucency.
Is full ceramic just as stable as tooth replacement with a metal framework?
Modern full ceramic is considered load-bearing and durable, and it is often the preferred choice, especially in the highly visible front tooth area, because of its natural appearance. We discuss individually which area it is suited for.
For which types of tooth replacement is full ceramic used?
Full ceramic is used, among other things, for crowns, bridges, inlays and veneers. We clarify which material suits your situation in the consultation.

Questions About Aesthetic Medicine

Can you tell afterwards that an aesthetic treatment was done in the mouth and lip area?
The goal of a good aesthetic treatment is a natural result that does not stand out as a treatment. In the consultation, we honestly discuss what result is realistically achievable for you.
Which aesthetic treatments in the mouth area do you offer?
In addition to dental aesthetics, we offer selected aesthetic treatments in the mouth and lip area for a harmonious overall look. We are happy to discuss the details in a personal consultation.
Is an aesthetic treatment in the mouth area painful?
Depending on the treatment, gentle procedures are used that are usually well tolerated. We explain the procedure and possible sensations in detail beforehand.

Questions About Professional Teeth Cleaning

How often should you go for professional teeth cleaning?
We usually recommend a professional teeth cleaning once or twice a year. How often it makes sense for you depends on your individual tendency towards tartar and staining.
Does a professional teeth cleaning hurt?
A professional teeth cleaning is generally painless. If your gums are sensitive, the treatment may feel a little sensitive, but this can usually be eased well.
What does a professional teeth cleaning achieve that daily oral care cannot?
During professional cleaning, we remove plaque and staining even from hard-to-reach spots that are often not reachable with a toothbrush alone.

Questions About Sports Mouthguards

Is an individually fitted mouthguard worth it compared to one from a sports shop?
An individually made mouthguard fits precisely and is therefore more comfortable and protects more reliably than standard models.
Do children also need a fitted sports mouthguard?
Yes, we offer precisely fitted mouthguards for teenagers, children and adults, which can be adapted as the teeth develop.
How does a sports mouthguard absorb impacts?
The sports mouthguard absorbs and distributes impact forces: one side is elastic for good cushioning, the other side stable enough to distribute the pressure evenly.

Questions About SOLO Prophylaxis

What is SOLO prophylaxis?
With SOLO prophylaxis, we teach you simple, effective techniques to clean hard-to-reach problem areas well yourself, such as the spaces between the back teeth.
Why isn't normal tooth brushing enough everywhere?
Bacterial deposits form first in hard-to-reach spots that the toothbrush alone can barely reach. That is exactly what we practise with you, using suitable, complementary techniques.
When does SOLO prophylaxis make sense?
SOLO prophylaxis is especially useful directly after a professional teeth cleaning, to maintain the achieved plaque-free result as well as possible in everyday life.

Questions About Fluoride Trays

What is the benefit of a fluoride tray?
Fluoride makes tooth enamel more resistant to acid and thereby lowers susceptibility to decay. An individually made tray holds the fluoride gel specifically against the teeth instead of losing it via the lips or tongue.
How often does a fluoride tray need to be used?
The tray is usually filled with a little fluoride gel in the evening and worn for a certain time. We discuss the exact usage schedule with you individually.
For whom is a fluoride tray especially useful?
It is especially suitable for patients with an increased susceptibility to tooth decay, since the contact time of the fluoride on the tooth determines its effectiveness.

Questions About Fissure Sealing

What is fissure sealing, and does my child need it?
With fissure sealing, the deep grooves of the molars are closed with a special material so that food residue can no longer collect there. It is especially advisable directly after the permanent molars erupt in children and teenagers.
Does fissure sealing hurt?
No, sealing is a painless procedure: the fissure is first cleaned and then closed with a sealing material, completely without drilling or anaesthetic.
From what age does fissure sealing make sense?
It makes the most sense directly after the permanent molars erupt, usually at primary-school age, since the deep chewing surfaces are especially prone to decay at that time.

Questions About Bad Breath

Where does bad breath usually come from?
The causes of bad breath are varied and are usually found within the oral cavity itself, for example bacterial plaque or gum problems, and less often other underlying conditions.
Is it embarrassing for me to talk to the dentist about bad breath?
You don't need to feel that way: about every second person is affected by bad breath at some point, and it is not a taboo topic for us. We discreetly look for the cause and a solution together.
What helps permanently against bad breath?
Depending on the cause, more thorough oral hygiene, a professional teeth cleaning, or treatment of an underlying condition can help. We clarify together which approach suits you.

Questions About Tooth Decay in Children

Do baby teeth with cavities actually need to be treated?
Yes, baby teeth should also be treated for tooth decay, as they act as placeholders for the permanent teeth and treatment avoids pain or inflammation.
How does tooth decay develop in baby teeth?
Food residue and saliva form plaque, which, without sufficient oral hygiene and the correct brushing technique, sticks to the teeth and can lead to tooth decay.
How can I prevent tooth decay in my child?
We practise the correct brushing technique together with children and parents and seal cavity-prone fissures if needed, to effectively prevent early childhood tooth decay.

Questions About the Transmission of Caries Bacteria

Can I transmit tooth decay to my child as a parent?
Yes, decay-causing bacteria can pass from parents to the child via shared spoons or by licking the pacifier, and increase the child's own risk of tooth decay.
Why is the dental health of the parents important for the child's teeth?
A mouth with decayed teeth usually contains a higher number of bacteria than a healthy mouth. Through shared contact, these bacteria can be transmitted to the child.
How can I prevent the transmission of caries bacteria to my child?
Avoid sharing spoons or licking the pacifier, and pay attention to your own dental health. If you have questions, we are happy to advise you individually on this.

Children

How does braces treatment work for children?
That depends on age. During the transition from baby teeth to permanent teeth (mixed dentition), we take advantage of natural jaw growth. At this stage, treatment usually involves removable braces, such as single plates or gentle appliances like the Bionator.
My child still sucks their thumb – does that damage the teeth?
Yes, persistent thumb sucking or prolonged use of a pacifier are bad habits (so-called "habits") that can lead to an open bite or crossbite. Early treatment during the baby teeth phase helps prevent more severe misalignments later on.
When should I take my child to the orthodontist for the first time?
Initial orthodontic check-ups are usually recommended from the age of 3 to 5 to detect misalignments in the baby teeth early. If there are no abnormalities, the age of 8 to 9 during the tooth change phase (mixed dentition) is ideal for the first examination.
From what age does health insurance cover braces for my child?
Statutory health insurance covers the costs for children and adolescents when there is a medical necessity. This is classified according to the orthodontic indication groups (KIG levels 3 to 5). We check this classification directly during the first examination.
How can dental misalignments in children be prevented?
Some jaw anomalies are genetic and unavoidable. However, many misalignments develop through avoidable habits. To prevent maldevelopment, harmful habits such as thumb sucking, intensive use of pacifiers or feeding bottles should be stopped by the age of three at the latest. Mouth breathing with open lips, incorrect swallowing patterns (where the tongue presses against the teeth), and lip biting should also be addressed early.
Thorough oral hygiene and a tooth-friendly diet protect against premature loss of baby teeth.
Are pacifiers and thumb sucking harmful to the teeth?
Yes, persistent thumb sucking or intensive pacifier use beyond the third year of life damages dental development and can lead to an "open bite" or deformed jawbones. The consequences are often pronounced dental misalignments and associated speech disorders such as lisping.

Adolescents

Is there a completely invisible type of braces?
Yes, the so-called lingual technique offers an aesthetically perfect and virtually invisible alternative to conventional braces. The brackets are custom-made and bonded to the inside of the teeth. The treatment can go completely unnoticed by others in everyday life or at school.
Another alternative are aligners. The transparent, nearly invisible dental aligners are hardly noticed in everyday life and allow for an elegant correction without drawing attention.
How long do aligners need to be worn daily?
The duration of treatment with invisible aligners is individual and depends on the extent of the dental misalignment. For mild to moderate corrections, therapy is usually successfully completed in approximately 9 to 15 months.
For an optimal and fast treatment result, aligners must be worn at least 18 to a maximum of 22 hours per day. The trays should only be removed for eating, drinking sugary or acidic beverages, and for dental care. Consistent wearing shortens the overall treatment time.
Are aligners suitable for adolescents?
Yes. For adolescents who prefer a discreet treatment, aligners can be a suitable alternative to conventional braces. We offer young patients a discreet correction with individually fitted aligners.

Adults

Is orthodontic treatment still possible for adults?
Yes, dental correction is possible at any age without restriction and is absolutely worthwhile in adulthood for health or aesthetic concerns. For adults, discreet and virtually invisible treatment methods such as transparent aligners or lingual braces (invisible braces on the inside of the teeth) are particularly popular.
How often do I need to visit the practice during treatment with transparent aligners?
With aligners, check-up appointments are usually every 6 to 8 weeks.
What are transparent dental aligners?
Aligners are thin, transparent plastic trays that are ideally suited for correcting mild to moderate dental misalignments. The ultra-thin trays fit precisely, are comfortable to wear, and do not interfere with speaking or laughing.
Transparent aligners are particularly suitable for adults and adolescents from around the age of 12.
How often do aligners need to be replaced with a new tray?
Depending on the misalignment and the system used, an aligner tray is usually replaced by the next tray in the treatment plan after two to three weeks. Regular check-up appointments at our practice ensure that tooth movement is progressing as planned.
How many hours a day do aligners need to be worn?
For an optimal and fast treatment result, aligners must be worn at least 18 to a maximum of 22 hours per day. The trays should only be removed for eating, drinking sugary or acidic beverages, and for dental care. Consistent wearing shortens the overall treatment time.
How long does aligner therapy take on average?
The duration of treatment with invisible aligners is individual and depends on the extent of the dental misalignment. For mild to moderate corrections, therapy is usually successfully completed in approximately 9 to 15 months.

Orthodontics

Why is orthodontic treatment beneficial?
Orthodontic treatment corrects misalignments of teeth and jaws to sustainably improve both the aesthetics of your smile and the health of the entire masticatory system. Beyond cosmetic corrections that boost self-confidence, the focus is on functional aspects: straight teeth optimise biting and chewing, which relieves the digestive system.
Complaints such as teeth grinding, jaw clicking, tension headaches, and even postural problems of the spine can be effectively prevented.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
The active treatment phase usually lasts about two to three years but depends greatly on the individual case. Key factors include the severity of the misalignment, the patient's age, and the type of braces chosen. Since the jaw is still growing in children and adolescents, therapy typically progresses faster than in adults. A precise time estimate is provided after the initial examination. The success and duration also depend significantly on the patient's reliability (compliance) in wearing removable appliances and maintaining oral hygiene.
When is the best time for the first visit to the orthodontist?
An initial orthodontic assessment is already advisable at the age of four to six to detect severe maldevelopments early. Although treatment during the baby teeth phase is rare, in serious cases early treatment with simple preventive appliances (such as space maintainers or vestibular plates) can prevent worse outcomes. The regular and most effective treatment period is usually between the ages of 9 and 11 during the late mixed dentition stage, as natural jaw growth can be optimally utilised at this time. If in doubt, parents should ask their family dentist for an assessment during the six-monthly routine check-up.
How often do I need to visit the practice for check-ups during orthodontic treatment?
The check-up intervals depend on the type of braces: for removable appliances and aligners, appointments are usually every 6 to 8 weeks, while fixed braces need to be checked and adjusted approximately every 3 to 4 weeks.

Orthodontic Prophylaxis

What should I pay attention to regarding dental care with braces?
Thorough oral hygiene is essential throughout the entire orthodontic treatment. Especially with fixed braces, plaque quickly builds up around the brackets and wires. Interdental brushes and dental floss help with precise cleaning of the gaps. The additional use of fluoride gels strengthens the tooth enamel. Supplementary professional prophylaxis measures at our practice offer the best protection against cavities.
Why do I need to go to the practice for prophylaxis?
The special advantage of professional dental cleaning at a specialist orthodontic practice is that all orthodontic appliances that would hinder a thorough cleaning are removed. Only this way can a comprehensive cleaning be ensured. Afterwards, the appliances are reinserted and optimally readjusted.
How often do I need to come to the practice for prophylaxis?
For most orthodontic patients, it is sufficient to have a professional dental cleaning carried out every three to six months. In special cases, professional cleaning at shorter intervals may be necessary.

Need for Treatment

How can I tell whether orthodontic treatment is necessary?
Typical signs include visible misalignment of teeth or jaws, an incorrect bite, difficulty biting or chewing, and recurring discomfort in the jaw joint. An orthodontic examination provides clarity on whether treatment is advisable and to what extent.
Can untreated misalignments lead to further problems?
Misalignments can create areas that are difficult to clean, which may increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Pronounced misalignments are also sometimes associated with tension in the jaw, neck and back. Whether this applies in your individual case is something we clarify together with you.
Is orthodontic treatment only relevant for aesthetic reasons?
No. Alongside the aesthetic wishes many patients have, functional aspects such as chewing, speech and breathing also play an important role. We discuss with you which medical and personal reasons apply in your specific case.

Treatment Planning

How does orthodontic treatment planning work?
The basis is a thorough examination including digital X-rays, facial photographs and a plaster model of the jaws. Using these records, we work out the right treatment path together with you.
What is a model analysis and what is it used for?
For the model analysis, we take impressions of the upper and lower jaw and use them to create a plaster model. This allows precise measurement of the teeth and jaws and forms an important basis for individual treatment planning.
Does planning also take growth and tooth eruption into account?
Yes. Especially in children and adolescents, current jaw growth and the stage of tooth eruption are factored into the planning so that treatment can be well matched to individual development.

3D Diagnostics

What is digital volume tomography (DVT/CBCT) and when is it used?
DVT is a low-radiation, three-dimensional X-ray procedure. We use it particularly for more complex misalignments, for example in cases of disturbed tooth eruption, impacted or displaced teeth, or unusual bone structures.
Does 3D diagnostics involve a high radiation dose?
Compared with conventional CT scans, digital volume tomography is considered low-radiation. We use it selectively, only when the additional diagnostic benefit meaningfully complements conventional X-ray diagnostics.
What advantage does 3D diagnostics offer for treatment planning?
The high-resolution, three-dimensional images show the structures of the jaw in detail and without distortion. This supports us in precise planning as well as in monitoring the course of treatment.

DentalMonitoring App

What is the DentalMonitoring app and what is it used for?
The DentalMonitoring app allows the progress of your orthodontic treatment to be followed digitally. Using regular scans taken with the app and the corresponding scan box, interim steps of the treatment can be made visible.
What do I need to use DentalMonitoring?
You only need a smartphone with the DentalMonitoring app and a DentalMonitoring scan box. Our team will explain how to use it in detail; no special prior knowledge is required.
Does the app replace regular check-up appointments at the practice?
No. DentalMonitoring complements personal care but does not replace the necessary check-up appointments at the practice. If anything unusual appears in the scans, we will contact you additionally if needed.
